  1. I like the number candles or the little trick candles that when you try to blow them out they won’t got out.

  2. Diamond candles are very popular right now. I gave nor to a friend when her son passed and she loved it. There is a ring in every candle. Plus they are all natural ingredients and smell better and longer than most.

  3. Happy Birthday, Amber! Enjoy your celebration! I prefer the numbers because I hate getting wax all over the cake trying to light all those individual candles – it’s all about the cake to me! πŸ™‚

  4. My family always does the number candles and then a single candle for good luck. It has been a tradition for as long as I can remember and one I share with my children on their birthdays.

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER!!!!! I like testing my lung capacity and put my age in candles on my b-day cake, besides it lights up a room rather nicely then just one or two candles lol

  6. Happy birthday woot woot woot. I like lots of candles the more the merrier. One year my hubby got me candles that sparkled as they burned they where very cool.

  7. Happy Birthday Amber!!!

For my girls I put the number of candles and also a number candle on the cake (this year 3 and 5). I live birthdays through the kids, so I always try to make a nice bash for them πŸ™‚

My birthday is July fourth, so I usually get an Americana cake with four candles…..and later fireworks in my honor (so I’m a little delusional, but I maintain that I am right!)

Btw, I adore your blog story , I hope it will grow longer than the month is long. πŸ˜‰

  8. I’ve always liked multiple candles over numbers, but as I’m 57 next time. Just the one candle would be good. Have a lovely time with your lovely hubby. Happy Birthday ( again. Lol)

  9. Happy, Happy b-day! πŸ˜€ remember cake & other treats have no calories today (that’s my story & I’m sticking to it) πŸ˜‰ I like enough candles to spread over the cake, but not so many that the there’s no chance of getting them all out so depending upon the cake size I guess somewhere btwn 8-12 candles (though a cupcake can make due w/ just one). Have fun celebrating πŸ™‚

  10. Happy Birthday!
For me none, lol. The kids I prefer singles. But if I get candles for myself I get numbers.

  11. I love the ones that relight. So you have to put a bunch and then regular one between them so that when the ones that relight light back up they light the regular one too lol. Did that to my mom once on her 40th birthday. With 40 candles. The smoke alarms went off but it was so worth it.

    1. Oh and Happy Birthday. I posted it on your facebook but it never hurts to hear it more than once πŸ™‚

  12. One candle. Numbers are depressing, and once can’t really fit all those candles without ruining the cake design. But I do like the ones that sparkle though πŸ™‚

  13. I wish you a very happy birthday, thank you for blessing us with you’re wonderful stories.
Has for candles I prefer just one I have to the age that one will suffice.

    Happy Birthday!

  14. Happy Birthday Amber! Have a great celebration πŸ˜€

I like individual candles. Firecracker style is the best. I had them for my birthday when my kiddo was 1 and half. Scared the crap out of her. That story is still a classic in the family 12 years later!!!

  15. Happy Birthday!! In my family we have a tradition of putting as many candles on the cake that we can then we hide in a couple trick candles and watch the fun.

  16. I love having multiple candles. I enjoy it because my 3 kids can help me blow them out and the smile and laughing they do is the best present ill ever have.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Hey Amber,
Happy birthday!!! I hope you and your family celebrate many more to come together πŸ™‚ My candle preference is lighting up the individual candels πŸ™‚ It helps me stay my age according to my brothers πŸ˜‰ and this way I get my brothers to help me blow them out πŸ˜„

  18. Happy Birthda!!! Set the house on fire….more is alway’s good. and sparkly candles or sparklers….sparkly is always best!!

  19. I prefer the candles with numbers as I’m getting older now. Have a great birthday Amber. πŸ™‚ Please enter me in the ARe GC contest. Thank you.

  20. happy birthday amber, hope you have a wild celebration. My favorite is to fill the cake with candles. We usually have two cakes though. A joke cake and the real one. So we dont get candle wax all over the place.Like this year my joke cake was a spider and let me tell you it looked really real!

  21. LOL. I don’t want the number candles. One box of candles is more than enough now that I have gotten older. What is more important is the people I am with to celebrate with.

  22. I am at the age where I am to impatient for cake, so just a few, everybody knows how old I am….so, let’s get to the cake.

  23. Happy Birthday Amber πŸ™‚ , Have a wonderful day and enjoy every second. I like setting the house on fire! I think you should celebrate life and every birthday is such a gift! It needs to be celebrated!!!

  24. Happy birthday! I like the number candles or those shaped like different things. I saw a pretty pink candelabra in a store that I really wanted to buy (just a bit to expensive to put on a cake).

  25. I love lots of candles because that means you need a lot of cake to handle them. This year my step-mom got me the coolest candles. The flames matched the candles, so I had a rainbow of flames on the cake. I had never seen different colored flames. It was the simple thing that made me the happiest.

  26. I like to set the cake on fire when it’s my birthday. I hope to cover the whole thing with them … eventually… after a couple more years πŸ˜€
    P.S. Happy Birthday!

  27. Happy B-Day! I like to set the house on fire. Of course depending on how many candles are need may not be enough cake room so number candle surrounded by candles you can’t blow out.

  28. I cover every inch of the top of the cake in candles. They are for all the birthdays I hope to celebrate.

  29. I like a box full of candles on my cake with the icing numbers that you can eat after. But one time I put too many candles on and they all sort of melded together to make a super candle and as I carefully walked to the sink with the fire cake (ran shouting out OH OH OH FIRE OH), I maybe… sort of… bunt off my eyebrows and had to draw them back on for a few weeks until they grew back πŸ™‚ But the cake was nice when we managed to chip all the wax off.
    Happy birthday though πŸ˜€

  30. Happy Birthday! I like just one regular candle and since my birthday is next week and it often falls on Thanksgiving, that’s what I usually get, except it’s often in a pumpkin pie rather than a cake. πŸ˜€

  31. Yay! Happy birthday Amber. Enjoy your celebration!
For me, one candle is enough. For my kids, I like to use number candles along with the specific number of candles for their age. πŸ™‚

  32. Happy Birthday Amber!

I do number candles with about 4 or 5 standard candles around the numbers. This way the cake doesn’t look too lonely with only numbers nor does it have too many candles that overwhelm the cake as I don’t do much in terms of decoration for the cake. Plus when using the numbers, I remember what birthday it was when looking back at the pictures. πŸ™‚

  33. Happy Birthday ^^

I do the number candles… and the cake most times is a regular one… know if I convince them to get an ice cream cake then my b’day is all the more perfect but for some reason it rarely happens….

  34. Happy Birthday Amber!! My favorite candles are the trick ones. I try to have a few on so the little ones can blow them out.

  35. You I don’t think I ever had candles on my cake since I passed my teens. And now I am in my 50 I don’t know if I want any.

  36. I love to have many scattered tealights. I have various Dragon tealight holders and my 2 favorite dragon oil burners (using wax melts). Awesome fragrances and peaceful mood setting. Love it.

  37. Happy Birthday Amber!! I don’t prefer candles at all. It messes with the design of the cake. I know I’m weird…lol

  38. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER!!! I hope you have a wonderful day! I like the number candles. When you get up in your 40s, like me, it’s easier to blow out two candles rather than over 40 of them. LOL

  39. Happy birthday! I like the novelty candles. Unusual candles I find along the way. Most recent is one where I spelled my friends name out with letter candles. πŸ™‚

  40. Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to Amber! Happy Birthday to you! (Mind you this is sung loudly and waaaay off key πŸ™‚ ) And what’s the use of getting older if you can’t cover the cake in candles?

  41. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER! Hope you have a good one πŸ˜‰
Because I’m so old (lol) the one candle is best for me, don’t want to burn down the house, LOL!!

  42. Happy, happy Birthday! I’m a fan of one wee little candle that way the cake doesn’t get ruined with candle wax!

  43. I honestly don’t care if it’s just one candle or if it’s number candles, but I DON’T like the idea of “burning the house down” by putting a candle for each year. As my aunt says, too much of a good thing can be too much of a good thing…lol

  44. Since my youngest is 22 I prefer the numbers. Plus the kids both have autism and will blow the candles out as soon as I light them (because that is what you are supposed to do). Lighting two candles before they can blow them out is definitely easier than 22! I hope you have a blessed birthday!

  45. I like the number. I want all to know my age. Not sure the cake would be big enough for the number of candles

  46. Hello Amber!! πŸ™‚
Happy Birthday to you!!! Wish you all the best for the coming year!~
Ohhh and enjoy your special day to the MAX!! πŸ˜€

As for candles, I’m a “set the house on fire” kind of gal!!!
You only once celebrate this specific number birthday, soo why not go all out!!?~

  47. I love candle light. I usually have a couple on the fireplace mantle, and the a few around the room. My hunny says I’m going to go blind because of reading with such low light. But hay that’s what the IPad light is for!

  48. Happy Birthday!! I haven’t had a cake with candles on it since I was a small child so I’m gonna say I miss having all those candles to blow out. I’m proud of my years so I’d show them off, lol.

  49. So, I guess I didn’t read the question right! I like your age on the cake. That way in later years you can tell which B-Day it was in the pictures!

  50. Happy Birthday, Amber and many happy returns of the day.

I prefer three single candles. One to remember the past; one to celebrate the present; and one to bring luck in the future.

  51. Happy day of your birth Amber. I really like one candle for each year. Burn the house down. I had 50 candles this year. Six of them where the ones that didn’t blow out. It was so funny.

  52. Happy Birthday! My family tends to get just the number candles, which only requires two candles on the cake, no fire hazard! But when we were little it was a candle for every year! And my parents are always one single candle people, after you pass 50 it’s all moot they think!

  53. Happy Birthday Amber! I love the number candles for little kids, but as we get older it’s more fun watching someone try to light all those candles without burning down the house or their fingers or the cake!

  54. Happy Birthday. My father’s was earlier this month and my son’s is Christmas Eve. He will be 10. Last couple years we have been switching it up. For his 8th we did 8 candles. But for the 9th it was a #9. Think we will be back to the 10 candles this year.

  55. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. I like to set house a blazing. I work hard for those years I am going to celebrate in style.

  56. A single sparkling candle in the middle of a slice of cheesecake works for me!

My mom did number 16 for my surprise b-day party.I thought that was so cool…then.
In my twenties and thirties it was all very shhhhh ,1 candle. Now I’m almost 50, BURN THE HOUSE BABY!!!

  58. Happy Birthday!! Hope it is a fantastic one!!
Candles – Don’t like any, but if you are gonna make me deal with them – use the true number and set the house on fire!!

  59. Happy birthday amber! I don’t mind seeing all the candles on my cake because it shows me all that I have accomplished in life.

  60. My kids spelled out the numbers of my birthday with regular candles. We got the feel of a lot of candles without setting the house on fire. It was really cute. My kids did a great job with my cake.

    1. It depends on how old you are the first few years when you need help blowing out candles its cute to have the numbers 1-4 then until 29 regular candles are cool then when you hit milestones like 30 40 and up you should use numbers. Then when you hit a good year like 75 I say you should have sparklers and every year after, but no numbers cud at that point you don’t need to be reminded of your age. So happy birthday and don’t forget those 29 candles on your cake. πŸ˜‰

  61. Happy YOU day, Amber! I hope you’re having a wonderful day!

Ah, the all-important candle question. There definitely has to be a candle on a cake. That’s a given. A non-candled birthday cake is completely against all laws of nature. I have had numbers for a while now, but I hope when the numbers start really getting up there that someone puts all my years on the cake. I’m damn proud of every year on this earth, and lucky, too! It won’t make me feel bad having to blow out so many candles, unless I don’t have enough lung strength. Maybe they’d need to use those tall, skinny ones, though, because by the time they’d get the last one lit, the first one might be melted down!

  62. Happy birthday!~<3 I hope it goes wonderful for you, Amber~ You deserve it!

I think I would rather just have one as I get up there in years. I'd rather not have wax all over the cake. x'D

  63. Happy Birthday! Set the house on fire! Not really the whole house just the cake. But I like cake. Hummmm. Maybe no candles, a cake for every year!

  64. I absolutely love to see all the individual candles lit up!! Especially when you turn off the lights and everyone is singing, after all, everyone looks good in candle light!!!

  65. I think all three. lol When I was young I liked having the number of candles that was my birthday on the cake. When I hit 20 I want the candles the look like numbers. When I hit 30 or 35 I want just one candle so I don’t burn down the house, get wax all over the cake and so one can know my age even if they do lol.

  66. Happy Birthday Amber. I like one candle in the middle of the cake. Make your Birthday wish and blow it out. That way you have a better chance of your wish coming true. Enjoy !!

  67. Happy Birthday! I like a lot of TRICK candles. So funny when they are blown out and then they relight and have to be blown out again. LOL

  68. *β€’β™«β™ͺHappy Birthdayβ™ͺβ™«β€’*Β¨*β€’.ΒΈΒΈβ™₯ ΒΈΒΈ.β€’*Β¨*β€’β™«β™ͺ to you β™ͺβ™«β€’*Β¨*β€’.ΒΈΒΈβ™₯ ΒΈΒΈ.β€’*Β¨*β€’β™«β™ͺ Happy Birthdayβ™ͺβ™«β€’*Β¨*β€’.ΒΈΒΈβ™₯ ΒΈΒΈ.β€’*Β¨*β€’β™«β™ͺ to you β™₯ β™₯ β™₯ Happy Birthday dear Amber!!!! ….β™ͺβ™«β€’*Β¨*β€’.ΒΈΒΈβ™₯ ΒΈΒΈ.β€’*Β¨*β€’β™«β™ͺ Happy Birthday β™ͺβ™«β€’*Β¨*β€’.ΒΈΒΈβ™₯ΒΈΒΈ.β€’*Β¨*β€’β™«β™ͺ…to YOU!!! *β€’β™«β™ͺ

And at my age, lets set that house on fire. (your age, not so much)

  69. Hope you have the Happiest Birthday Ever! I love birthdays, it beats the alternative. Lol. I’m good with either but since I’ve hit my 40’s I’ve started to go with the number shaped candles otherwise my husband would get out of control and probably put extra on just to mess with me. πŸ™‚

  70. Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have a great day!! I can’t remember the last time I actually had a birthday cake but for the kids I like the number candles. I usually try to have really cool cakes made up and the numbers don’t mess it up or take up as much room. Like the year our oldest turned 7 his party was Mario themed and I got him a mushroom shaped cake, seven candles wouldn’t have really gone over well! πŸ™‚

  71. Happy Birthday. Whats it like to be 21 again?
I love the candles, that when you blow them out, the relight themselfs !
They are brilliant. Your forever blowing them out til you put a little bit of cold water on them. Hope your having a fab day, you deserve it πŸ˜€ xx

  72. I like enought to set the house on fire. When my father in law turned 65 we actually put 65 candles on the cake and once we got them all lit, the smoke detector in the house went off. It was a hoot. Happy Birthday!!!

  73. Have a most magical birthday Amber *tosses confetti*

I love just a few candles on a cake….though I love to get those that relight until you stick the candle in a cup of water. Drives my kids nuts. lol

  74. I hope you have a great day today, so happy birthday, My favourite candles would have to be one for every year (a fire hazard) yay which just means you have to make a bigger cake (which isnt bad since its your birtday)

  75. Today we celebrate the day you were born and we are all glad for it – Have a very Happy Birthday.
I like lots but as I have aged the size of the cake has had to grow . This year I had a small get together so went for numbers and a small cake. Variety is good too.

  76. I dont like candles for my cake. had the trick candles used too many times on me and why make it easy for them to tell my age. happy birthday amber hope its all you wished for.

  77. Happy Birthday. Have fantastic day. Hope the weather is better where you are. Pouring rain here. At least it isn’t snow yet.
I don’t care for candles anymore. If you really want candles, how about 1 for each decade. A single candle seems really pathetic, even on a cupcake.

  78. Happy Birthday.please enjoy your day. I hope you have a great birthday.

I love number candles or one candle. Less to blow out.

  79. Hi Amber, happy birthday. I have got to the age where one candle per decade is the best option, otherwise a bushfire may result.

  80. I have to say that gien a choice, I would pick one candle to wish on. Alas, I am not consulted when candles are chosen. My sons prefer the numbers or putting candles in groups to show my age. (ex. four candles and three candles last year for my forty-third birthday) At least they learned from their grandmother’s mistake- never put twenty-five magic relighting candles on a nine inch round cake without a fire extinguisher on hand!

  81. I want to set the house on fire with the candles that have different colored flames and relight after you blow them out!

  82. Happy Birthday Amber! Hope you have a great day!!! On my cake I would like to have a candle for every year. Unfortunately, that would be a risk to burning the house (or at least the cake) down!!!

  83. Happy Birthday Amber!!!!!!

I would love to have a candle for each year but I admit the need to be practical means I would be better off with just 1 hehe, although knowing my family they would use the joke candle that wont go out!!!

  84. My birthday was Tuesday and there were no candles on my cheesecake. If it had been a regular cake I would like to have those twisty candles and lots of them.

  85. I’m afraid I’ve got to go with just one candle……I’ve seen way to many times blowing out candles are more like ‘spraying’ out. YUCK!!!

    Happy Birthday, Amber!!!

  86. Happy Birthday Amber!!! I hope you have a wonderful day…I guess I prefer just the numbers but I usually don’t have any..my birthday is usually so close or on thanksgiving that my mom started a tradition years ago of making a big smiley face with whip cream on a pumpkin pie so..lol….we have 9 birthdays in November so it seems we are always having cake so I guess pumpkin pie is the way to go..lol..Have a Happy Birthday!!!

  87. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER and may the muse of inspiration be with you throughout the whole year. I like to put one candle for each year and i prefer the candles colourful as in rainbow colourful

  88. Happy Birthday Day to you! Hope you enjoyedyour trip out.
Up to 21, candles to match are a must! After that, too much of a fire risk. I like the sparkler candles – and the silly ones that sing happy birthday when lit!

  89. Happy birthday Amber! my favorite candle is one my mom had last year, its shaped like a closed flower, you light the middle candle and it spins plays happy birthday and opens its petals which all have candles that are lit by the middle one, or set the house on fire, that works too!

  90. I Definitely prefer the small coloured candles and then put on the amount however old the person is turning. My boys love to blow out the candles. Quite often we have to relight them just so they can have another turn.

  91. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great time today! I prefer the small candles and the set the house on fire style!

  92. Happy Birthday Amber !!! My favorite candles are the ones with the numbers and totally simple because when I look at that delicious birthday cake with my ‘new’ age it reminds me ‘woow there goes another year’.

  93. This year, we went with none …. The cake was for 3 of us and we are 3 different ages! (Me, my SIL and my bro, our birthdays are within 2 days of each other – 11/11 & 13/11!!)

  94. Happy birthday! In my family, we mainly. use the numbers – and we save them so that they are used multiple times. I come from a large family so it helps to aways have a stash of candles on hand:)

  95. Happy Birthday Amber

I like the number candles.. much easier to blow out. But to other people I like to give them the trick candles they don’t blow out… lol

  96. Happy Birthday Amber! Two candles for me, one for my B-Day the other for luck. Mine will be on Turkey Day.

  97. Happy Birthday Amber. I tend to use the number candles for the kids, they seem to prefer that to the others.

  98. Happy Birthday!! I like the little number candles. That way as I get older, I still only physically have two candles on my cakes. LOL

  99. Hope you’re having a wonderful Birthday! My birthday is next Thursday (Thanksgiving…what’s better than that?!?) and I love LOTS of candles.

  100. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMBER. Enjoy every minute of the day with family and friends, God bless you. I like the numbers candles.

  101. Hope you have a great day Amber!! πŸ™‚ I like having candles all around the outside of the cake- so they make a circle. I’m not sure why really…I’ve just always had them like that! Blame my Mum and Dad I guess πŸ˜€

  102. I hope you have a great Birthday Amber….I like them in numbers….I think I usually wind up with 6-7 in my main room then 1 or 2 in the others ( I go through a lot of tea lights and votives…..when sales are good pillars as well) lol

  103. I like fire, and attempting to light my cake on fire is lots of fun. I like all of the little candles …as long as no one uses the trick candles for all of them.

  104. Happy Birthday!
My new favorite candles are the ones that are letters to spell out the birthday celebratee’s name. After that I like the numbers plus extra for fun.

  105. Happy Birthday Amber!! πŸŽ‰I’m actually not picky about the number of candles. I just really like the differe trick candles. The kind that don’t go out when you blow in them or that change colors if they’ve been burning too long.

  106. Fire! Fire! Fire! Lots of candles on my cake these days. It is hard to get them all lit in time. Happy Birthday to you! November is a great month for birthdays.

  107. Happy, Happy Birthday. I like the number candles. I’m getting to old to blow out individual candles, so I prefer just the two necessary!!

  108. Happy Birthday! It depends on age. When I was little I liked having a bunch of candles to blow out but once I got older it was just annoying to have to blow that many out before the wax melted or the cake caught on fire so it was usually just one candle or the numbers.

  109. I like to set the house on fire – and when it is my birthday, I am getting old enough to do it!

Happy Birthday! And thanks for the giveaway.

  110. Happy birthday! I like either one candle, or sometimes a couple of different-colored candles to symbolize different year configurations (for instance, a 31-year-old’s cake could have 3 candles of one color and 1 of another). I tend to bake my own cakes, and too many candles wreck the frosting!

  111. Happy Birthday Amber, enjoy yourself with the family. Have fun and forget the calories, they don’t count for Birthday girls!!!

  112. Happy Birthday Amber. My birthday was yesterday and Ilike the candles that don’t go out and the sparkle.

  113. I’m one of the ones who like to set the house on fire. Heh, if not that i like doing the number of the persons age using trick candles.

    Happy Birthday, Amber!!

  114. My favorite is several Yankee candle Christmas cookie candles burning around the house while cleaning, reading, etc

  115. haven’t even had a birthday cake since I was very young, Now if i had one i think a number candle preferably without the number. Think with 56 candles, there wouldn’t be any cake left and wouldn’t have enough breath to blow them all out lol

  116. I like to use a few candles (not necessarily the same number to equal the persons age) and do a little design with them (i.e. a heart or a star, or something specific to that person). That’s really for other people though. For my own birthday I mostly make cheesecake and forgo candles altogether.

  117. Happy birthday !!! Nay it be one that will bring lots of smiles and wonderful memories.
I for one like one candle only but my kids usually bring all the candles that will be need for my birthday 😷.

  118. One is fine with me. I don’t want to melt all the frosting on the cake by putting all the candles on it. The wish still counts as long as you still blow out the candle. Many happy birthday wishes. I hope your hubby does something special for you today. Enjoy your day.

  119. Happy Birthday!!

I’ve never used the number candles before and it kind of looks plain to me when I see only one candle on a cake. My family uses the number of candles for the person plus one for luck.

  120. I prefer to light up the house with the many candles. I’ve earned them, 1 a year, for all my years. And there r too many for people to count quickly. Lol.

  121. I always liked when there are a lot of candles, especially the ones that never go out, it’s fun to try to blow them out. lol. Happy Birthday!

  122. Happy birthday Amber hope all your wishes come true, as for candle am very picky I do love home made candles in very light scents like warm vanilla

  123. Haha!! Lately I’ve come to like the number candles. LOL!! They’re actually pretty cute and well… convenient.
But I gotta admit, I miss the individual candles I used to get as a kid. Haha! but getting 24 now is just too much. the Fire would get to the cake first before I ever did!! LOL

  124. Happy Birthday Amber!!! I like lots of candles, the trick ones that don’t blow out…for other peoples cakes πŸ˜€

  125. I like individual candles for how many years I am. Though it’s getting to the point they don’t all fit anymore…

Anyways, I hope you had a wonderful birthday!

  126. I prefer a couple candles on my cake. I have for years especially since I usually get a mini cake instead of cake of unusual sizes.

  127. I used to like one candle per year. I stopped when it started taking too long to light the candles. Now there are a dozen-ish, evenly spaced around the cake.

  128. Hope you had a great birthday Amber. We do tons of candles for the kids and then just e nough to make the cake look pretty for the adults.

  129. happy birthday! i like just the single candle since it looks cleaner and leaves less holes in your cake.

  130. Lets turn the house into an inferno. I like seeing all those candles a blaze they make me look younger with the lights off.

  131. Happy Birthday to you! πŸ™‚

And I prefer the set the house on fire candles ^_^ Maybe it’s the mischievous part of me that wants to make the candle lighting as difficult as possible for the person(s) doing the lighting, bwahahaha!

  132. I’m not into candles for birthdays – after all at 55 there’d be too many for the cake πŸ˜‰
