We’re here today for an interview with the Steel Mill boys! They’re never far from a camera, and they love to talk — among other things — on film. It’s been a few years since the last Screen Shots story, but that’s all set to change soon. We’ve caught Jake in passing, and even though he’s a busy man he’s got a big beautiful smile for the birthday girl today.
Jake: Happy birthday, Amber! Wishing you many more.
Willa: Great to see you again, Jake. I’ve been trying to get my hooks back in you—
Jake: Literally?
Willa: Don’t think I wasn’t tempted. But for right now — since you’re cooperating — we’ll say they’re metaphorical hooks.
Jake: (eyes Willa warily)
Willa: (beams)
Jake: You were saying?
Willa: I’ve wanted to continue your story ever since you got your dearest wish for a ten-way at the Steel Mill studios a few years ago. Since it’ll be your birthday soon too, I thought now would be a great time. Are you finally ready to talk?
Jake: (laughs ruefully) Just about, yeah. I’ve always been quiet. I used to be terribly shy. It took a long time to develop some confidence in myself — though I’ve got to admit, the ten-way gave me a pretty big boost. It’s almost impossible to doubt yourself after nine pay-for-play performers all turn their attention on you at the same time. That’s why I wasn’t playing nice when you called again, you know. You had the wrong idea about what my story should be up until recently, and I had to wait for you to figure that out.
Willa: I see that now, and I’ve got to say I’m glad I was wrong. You certainly look happier!
Jake: I am, thanks to the boys here at Steel Mill. I love those guys. If it isn’t too weird to say, they’re like family to me. Not like brothers, what we’ve got is definitely more than brotherly, but I would do anything for them and I know they’d do the same for me. They’ve helped me to become the man I always wanted to be, and now…
Willa: Now?
Jake: Now it’s time to keep ‘becoming’. I’ve been given a job opportunity I never even dreamed of. Katherine — she owns Steel Mill; you know her? — has been in talks with one of her proteges in New Mexico. His name’s Darius. He’s looking to strike out on his own, and Katherine’s approved him to start a second base of operations. (Takes a deep breath) And they’ve asked me to be a part of it.
Willa: You mean…
Jake: If I accept, Darius and I would be the chief operating officers of Steel Mill Southwest. Responsible for discovering new amateur talent, directing the films, running the business, and making my own mark on the world. The boys will always be here for me when I need them, but I think I’m ready for the next big step. The business plan is sound, and Darius… (whistle) There might be a spark there. I’d like to find out for myself.
Willa: Go for it, Jake. You can do it! Oh, and if you’d let me keep up with you I’d be appreciative.
Jake: You’ve got a deal.
