Hi Amber, thanks for letting me participate in your birthday bash!

I told PITA to have a chat with the characters for a birthday piece and Dray piped up with an idea. I guess the other characters weren’t interested…

*oblivious to the muffled sounds coming from the presents scattered around Dray’s cave*

So here is a short story with Pib and Dray! 🙂

 

Pib’s Surprise

 

Pib looked around the room, trying to pinpoint what was out of place. Something shiny in the corner of his vision had him turning his head to the right.

“What the…” Pib walked over and picked up the emerald.

“Now who would leave jewels just lying around?” he mused aloud.

Pocketing the gem, he was about to turn around and leave when a piece of gold two feet away caught his attention. Making sure the coast was clear, Pib strode over then crouched to pick up the gold nugget. Seeing the diamond a few paces away, Pib straightened then placed his hands on his hips.

Narrowing his eyes at the gem, he tried to figure out what was going on. “That mate of mine has been missing for a few hours. I bet he’s behind this. The question is—why?”

Looking ahead he saw various gemstones placed in a trail. “Well, if he wants to give me more of his treasure, it would be rude of me not to accept. Let’s see what that dragon is up to.”

Pib followed the trail, pocketing the gems as he went until he finally arrived at Dray’s treasure cave.

Walking inside, Pib looked around, then froze at the sight before him.

“What—”

“Happy birthday, Pib,” Dray said, stepping out from behind one of his mountains of treasure.

Pib glanced at him, then returned his attention to the pile of jewels arranged into the shape of a cake with a big blue ribbon wrapped around it.

He was so shocked all he could utter was, “Huh?”

Dray laughed, then walked over and wrapped his arms around Pib. “Wil told me a little while ago that your birthday was coming up. Since you didn’t mention anything, I thought I’d surprise you. And considering I know you like shiny things, I used gems to lead the way here.”

“You did all of this, for me?” Pib couldn’t remember the last time someone had been so considerate.

“Of course. I love you,” Dray declared.

“I love you too,” Pib replied, leaning up to kiss Dray. It was a chaste kiss, but oh so sweet.

“Come on, I’ve made us a picnic,” Dray said, taking Pib’s hand before stepping back then leading him to the picnic.

Following Dray, Pib wondered how many birthdays it would take before Dray gifted him with all of the treasure in his cave.

The shiny will be mine.

After nine years, Pib is finally free from his contract with the newly wed prince. Slipping out in the middle of the night to avoid getting stuck in another contract, Pib shifts into his cat and makes his way home to the little village he foolishly left, hoping his best friend Wil still lives there.

Dray is bored. His services as a princess-guarding dragon are no longer needed and even his gold and jewels are unable to cheer him up. His mood changes quickly when he catches someone in his treasure cave, and it starts a series of events that change his life forever.

When the two finally meet, sparks fly, but Dray will have to move quickly if he’s to save his cat after Pib gets kidnapped.
