Happy Birthday to Amber, and thank you for inviting me to take part in your month of celebrations!
I’ve written a small future take from my book, The Law of Attraction.
Ed texted Jen before heading down to the Mergers and Acquisitions department.
Is he still in his office?
Jen had called him to say the coast was clear, but he wasn’t taking any chances. He wanted this to be a surprise.
The reply came back immediately. Yes.
Still cautious, Ed shouldered the door open and put his head around it to double check that Alec’s office door was firmly closed. There was no sign of his boyfriend. Ed breathed a sigh of relief.
“Here let me help!” Jen came running over to relieve Ed of the cake box he was carrying.
“Thanks.” The bags slung over Ed’s arms clanked as he shifted the handles down so he could grip them properly.
“Sounds promising.” James grinned at him. “Hi, Ed. How are you?”
“Good thanks. Been madly busy with a tribunal, but it’s finally over so I’m looking forward to a quieter weekend for once.”
“Here Ed, bring the bags over here. I’ve cleared some space.” Jen had put the box down on an empty desk.
Ed crossed the open plan office, nodding and smiling as people greeted him. He knew all of Alec’s team from when he’d worked in this department as a temp earlier that year.
“How long have we got?” he asked Jen.
She checked her watch. “Five minutes. Katherine promised to keep him in there till six-thirty.”
“Right. Let’s get cracking.”
Jen clapped her hands. “Come on everyone. It’s all systems go. Operation Birthday Surprise.”
Alec looked surreptitiously at the time as Katherine insisted on going over the contract again. He didn’t normally mind working late, it was par for the course in this job, but today was his birthday. As this was the first year he had someone he wanted to celebrate with, he was keen to get going. He and Ed hadn’t made any elaborate plans, they were just going to get a takeaway and chill at home. Alec was secretly hoping the chilling might involve a birthday blowjob.
Finally, Katherine stopped and glanced at the clock on the wall. “Right, then. Thanks for that Alec. I think we’re done here.” She stood, straightening her immaculate trouser suit. “I hope you’re not staying late tonight?”
“No.” Alec stood too, slipping on his suit jacket before snapping his briefcase shut. “I’ve got plans.”
“Ah of course. It’s your birthday. Well I hope you have a pleasant evening.” There was an uncharacteristic twinkle in her eye.
Alec held the door open for her, and followed her through into the main office space.
“Surprise!” The shout nearly made him drop his briefcase.
“What the hell?” He gazed in amazement at the sea of grinning faces. Everyone in his team was there and so was Ed, whose grin was the widest of all.
An enormous silver sparkly banner saying: HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEC! was pinned to the wall opposite Alec’s office door.
Before Alec had a chance to say anything else, James started singing in his booming bass voice, “Happy birthday to you….”
The others joined in, including Katherine, so Alec had to stand there blushing furiously at the unexpected attention, while a warm bubble of happiness expanded in his chest. After they’d sung “Happy Birthday” they launched into “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and ended with a burst of applause.
“I hope you’re not planning on giving me the bumps,” Alec said dryly.
“No.” Ed stepped forward. “But I am going to give you a birthday kiss.” He took Alec’s hands and drew him close. “Happy birthday.” He pressed his lips to Alec’s in a sweet kiss while Alec’s colleagues made aww noises. When Ed broke away, he grinned. “And now it’s time for cake and fizz.”
The others parted to let them through to a desk that had been pushed up against the wall, and Alec laughed when he saw what Ed had done.
Standing in pride of place in the centre, was a giant, rainbow layered sponge cake with 33 piped on top of it in pink icing. Around it were arranged four bottles of champagne and some pink plastic flutes. James and Jon had already started opening the bottles and filling the glasses.
“This is the gayest birthday surprise I’ve ever seen,” Alec said. But he couldn’t stop the huge smile that spread across his face.
Ed chuckled. “Too bloody right it is. As it’s your first birthday out of the closet, I thought we’d do it in style.”
Alec wasn’t normally keen on public displays of affection. But fuck it. It was his birthday, and he had the best boyfriend in the world. He put his hands on Ed’s waist and tugged him close again. “Thank you.” He kissed him. “I love you.”
Everyone said aww again.
Ed’s cheeks turned as pink as the icing on top of the cake. “I love you, too.”
If you’d like to read the whole of Alec and Ed’s story, The Law of Attraction, here are the details.
When a professional relationship turns personal, it’s impossible to resist the law of attraction.
Alec Rowland is a high-flying lawyer in a London firm whose career is his life. He doesn’t have time for relationships and his sexuality is a closely guarded secret. After picking up a cute guy on a Friday night, Alec’s world is rocked to its foundations when his one night stand shows up in the office on Monday morning—as the new temp on his team.
Ed Piper is desperate to prove himself in his new job. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a crush on his boss. It’s hard to ignore the attraction he feels, even though Alec’s a difficult bastard to work for.
Both men strive to maintain a professional relationship, but tempers fray, passions ignite, and soon they’re both falling hard and fast. If they’re ever going to find a way to be together, Alec needs to be honest about who he really is because Ed won’t go back in the closet for anyone.
