My Favorite Birthday- Lane Hayes
November is one of my favorite months of the year. The crisp air, colorful autumn leaves, and the beginnings of ‘holiday fever’ are hard to beat. Oh yes, and it’s my birthday month too! In fact, I celebrated my birthday a week ago in Hawaii with my husband. I traded crisp air and autumn leaves for the tropics and palm trees and had a fabulously relaxing time. This wasn’t a milestone year for me and though our trip was wonderful, I wouldn’t say it was my best birthday ever. That honor goes to my fortieth.
My husband planned a surprise party…say no more. LOL He’s not the type who keeps secrets well. He dropped hints like, “we have an (out of the blue) formal work function to attend and you’ll probably want to dress up for it” and then asked if I’d gone shopping for the occasion. This was from the guy I have to remind at least twenty times about simple calendar events…like dinner with a neighbor. “Wait, you didn’t tell me about that” is a common phrase in our house. So yes, the every other day reminder tipped me off for sure. He might not have pulled off the ‘surprise’ part well, but the party itself was epic. He rented a huge space at a local museum. There was art on the walls (one of my personal passions) and the room was full of music, laughter, and my favorite people.
I’ve had lovely birthdays where the gift or the cake or the place I celebrated made it seem memorable, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a bit more sentimental. Shiny toys and cakes can be amazing, but spending a special occasion with the people I love most can’t be topped. I can’t remember any of the presents I opened or what kind of cake was served that night, but I’ll always remember how my cheeks hurt from smiling so hard and how grateful I felt to have so much love in my life. And with every year that passes, I realize that love, friendship and gratitude are truly the most important gifts.
Happy birthday, Amber! May your day be filled with all of your favorite things and people…and cake. Lots of cake!
Best wishes,
Lane Hayes xo
