I wandered through my WIP folder and found this little gem. I found it amusing so I thought I’d share 🙂
“What will you choose?”
Aistan tilted his head to see his friend better from his position on the hospital bed. “What are you talking about?”
“Vampire or were? What are you going to pick?”
Aistan ran his fingers across the crisp white sheets. “I feel like I’m in the middle of a conversation I don’t remember starting.”
“Are you going to petition the weres or the vamps? I think you should become a tiger shifter.” Stan flashed him a feral grin (change name). “I’d be happy to be your sponsor.”
“None of them.” Aistan nestled deeper into his pillows and closed his eyes. “I choose nothing.”
“B-but you’ll die.”
“Yes.” After all of the chemotherapy and weeping from friends and relatives, it would almost be a relief to go to the shadowland.
“You think your elf heritage will save you?”
Aistan laughed, a rough ugly sound he was unfamiliar with these days. “I’m only a 16th elf. They don’t even recognize me in the courts. The most I can do is grow a really great garden.” He grabbed Stan’s wrist. “Promise me you’ll take care of my garden.”
“I’ll hire someone to take care of it. You don’t remember the fate of that houseplant you bought me if you think I can take care of your garden.”
“You killed Howard?”
“My cat ate him.”
“He was a cactus!”
“Mr. Flufferson was very persistent.”
“You don’t have a cat named Mr. Flufferson,” Aisan protested.
“He was visiting.” Stan deadpanned.
“So, this imaginary visiting cat destroyed Howard the cactus.”
“That’s my story and I’m sticking to it,” Stan insisted.
“Fine. Talk to my cousin Maury he will take care of it. He has pixie blood and they’re always good with growing things.”
“If you say so.” Stan settled into the visitor’s chair, easily pulling the heavy furniture closer. “Now listen, I’m not going to let my best friend die. You will pick or I will pick for you.”
Aisan closed his eyes. “You can’t. You know the law.”
“Laws were meant to be broken.” Stan crossed his legs.
“I’m pretty sure that’s not true. Don’t worry about me Stan, I’m just tired.” Stan’s warm hand wrapped around Aisan’s wrist sending him to sleep with his comforting touch.
